Lake Garda among the 2019 best wine travel destinations worldwide

The U.S. magazine Wine Enthusiast has nominated the Lake Garda area as the only Italian wine-producing destination among the top 10 in the world to be visited in 2019.

This is thanks not only to Chiaretto, Bardolino, Lugana and Custoza wine varieties but also, according to Kerin O’Keefe, the manager for Italy of the US magazine, the extraordinary beauty of the landscapes as well as the historical and cultural wealth that can be found throughout the Lake Garda area.

In fact, in the opening paragraph of the dedicated section, O’Keefe writes: “Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy, is situated in the north of the country, between Brescia and Verona. Surrounded by mountains to the north, the area boasts an extremely mild microclimate. Apart from the olive groves and lemon trees that are quite a rare sight in the north, the region is studded with vineyards and it hosts some of the classic Italian wine varieties: red Bardolino, rosé Chiaretto and white Lugana and Custoza wines. With the onset of fine weather, picturesque lakeside towns, ancient ruins, medieval castles and magnificent panoramas make Lake Garda a paradise for gourmets of good food and wine, water sports and history lovers”.

The review gives several tips on wine tasting sessions, mentioning a wide range of wine cellars and sophisticated wine bars, for a relaxing break stating some of the countless hotels and resorts, where it is possible to do activities such as sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing or go on canoe trips, without forgetting sports not involving water such as cycling and trekking that can be done anywhere among the hills and mountains surrounding the great lake. Suggestions made by O’Keefe regarding leisure and cultural activities include visits to Gardaland, Castello Scaligero (Scaligero Castle) as well as the Grotte di Catullo (Catullo’s Caves) in Sirmione.

Moreover, it is also important not to forget the many splendid golf clubs in the Garda area that, every year, attract tourists from home and abroad, thanks to the mild temperatures, but also the variety of food, wine and cultural proposals available in this territory, the most interesting of which include (18+ holes) Gardagolf Country Club, Chervò Golf Hotel & SPA Resort San Vigilio, Arzaga Golf Club, Bogliaco Golf Club, Paradiso del Garda Golf Club, Villafranca Golf Club Le Vigne, Circolo Golf Ca’ degli Ulivi and Verona Golf Club.

Therefore, in this ranking, Lake Garda and its wines have achieved the recognition of the quality of the work carried out by winegrowers and wine producers. Indeed, Franco Cristoforetti, chairman of the Consorzio di tutela del Bardolino e del Chiaretto (Consortium for the Protection of Bardolino and Chiaretto wines) says, “this rewards the professionalism and determination of our winegrowers and wine producers who, over past years, have worked intensively to reinforce and raise the awareness of the values of our territorial identity, the element that is capable of making a significant distinction on the current, competitive wine-producing scenario”.
